English 11
Class Description
English 11 is a year-long course focusing on the study of British literature. In this class, students develop their active reading skills, sharpen their critical thinking abilities, enhance their vocabulary, and improve their writing. The class is discussion-based as we explore various literary works, including works by Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë, James Joyce, William Blake, Robert Browning, Christina Rossetti, and Roald Dahl (to name a few). Students are encouraged to examine literature's ambiguity, its focus on the gray areas of life, in literary essays. We also concentrate on argument writing - how to construct a claim, support it with evidence, posit a counterclaim, and refute that counterclaim - skills that will be essential in the college classroom.
An important note: all juniors take the New York State Common Core English Regents in January.
