Notes

Quarter grades will be determined according to the following:

70% - quizzes, tests, projects, and essays. I take the percentage of points earned out of total possible points. I.e., a student with grades of 18/20, 87/100, 5/12, and 21/25 has earned 131 points out of 157; her average in this category is therefore 83%.

15% - homework. I do surprise spot checks of homework completion almost every day. Students starts with a “preparedness” grade of 100% for each unit. For every time homework is not complete or the student is otherwise unprepared to participate, I dock 10 points.

10% - attendance and participation. Students are evaluated on a scale from 1 to 5.

1 – refuses to participate; frequently off-task or disruptive; excessively absent and/or tardy; frequently unprepared for class work

2 – little voluntary participation; frequently distracted or off-task, tardy to and/or unprepared in class, often reports to class without materials

3 – some voluntary participation, but still needs to be called upon; occasionally off-task or unfocused; occasionally reports to class without materials

4 – regular voluntary participation; good level of focus and motivation; asks questions for clarification, stays on task, works well with other students

5 - superb participation; extremely high level of focus and motivation; undertakes a guiding role in group work; takes great pride in her work and progress

5% - oral expression. I will grade students at random on their oral expression skills during paired activities. They can earn up to 4 points per evaluation for:

  • using French exclusively
  • following the directions of the exercise
  • using accurate grammar
  • using and accurately pronouncing new vocabulary

I permit three legal absences per quarter. Beyond this, a student will lose one point per day absent from her quarter grade.

Make-ups:

  • Students are allowed one make-up test per quarter, to be taken within 2 days of their return to school.
  • Students are allowed two quiz make-ups per quarter, to be taken within 1 day of their return to school.

Règles de la classe

This year will bring a number of changes in the way that we approach learning together. Please review the following policies, which might shift over time as necessary.

Classroom Policies:

  • Always wear your mask properly, over your mouth and nose.
  • Please speak loudly and slowly.
  • Respect and listen closely to your classmates. The room will be very noisy this year; we need to be good listeners.
  • Always bring your laptop with access to the PDFs of the textbook, workbook, and any other online material.
  • Please have a thin, light notebook for notetaking in class.
  • If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to:
    • check our class website for the homework assignment
    • get notes from a classmate
    • make up all homework within one day of your return to school
  • Quizzes and tests will be announced in advance, and will all be conducted online through classmarker.com. If you are legally absent (sick) on the day of a quiz or test, you may be allowed to take a make-up. Please consult the handbook to know what constitutes a legal absence.
  • Extended vacation days are illegal absences. Accommodation will be considered only for those students who inform me a week in advance in order to get assignments.
  • Your quarter grade will drop 1 point for each day absent beyond three absences. Exceptional circumstances, such as serious illness, will of course be considered.
  • Late assignments will be marked down 10% for every day late.

Distance Learning policies:

  • You must log in daily to your Zoom session. Failure to log in is the equivalent of an illegal absence. Please bring any technical difficulties to my attention IMMEDIATELY.
  • While Zooming, your face must be visible.
  • Keep your mic off until you’re ready to participate.
  • Use the raise my hand button.
  • Don’t text or chat with friends during class.
  • No class from bed, no eating on camera. Be professional.
  • Take good notes on presentations.
  • Focus on the topic or task when in your breakout rooms.
  • Have materials/work ready before class begins.
  • When taking quizzes online, students are expected to conduct themselves honestly. This means not use any secondary device, not consulting google/the internet, not sharing or obtaining answers with classmates, and having one's full attention on the classmarker screen.

Course description

French III is a course whose purpose is to emphasize the development of reading, writing, and communication skills on a high intermediate level. In this course, students will polish the wide array of French language skills learned in French II. We will cover a variety of topics concerning everyday life. We will also learn about French and francophone cultural movements and historic events. Emphasis will be placed on constructing grammatically complex sentences, both written and oral. • Communicate with native speakers to make travel plans in a francophone country.
  • Talk to a health professional about sickness or injury.
  • Plan social events with friends.
  • Explain where one lives, the features of one’s neighborhood, and how to get there.
  • Discuss interpersonal relationships.
  • Talk about professional aspirations.

Grammatical topics:

  • The use of the definite, indefinite, and partitive articles
  • The use of reflexive verbs
  • The use of the subjunctive mood
  • The uses of the passé composé and imparfait, with a focus on the usage of both to narrate a story in the past
  • The difference between direct and indirect object pronouns.
  • The personal pronouns y and en
  • The faire causitif
  • The simple future tense and the conditional mood

  • The sequence of tenses in si clauses
  • Relative pronouns, including dont and ce dont
  • The present participle

These objectives will be achieved through partnered activities, dialogues, skits, reflective writing, and other activities.

Cultural aspects about France and francophone countries will be taught through critical reading exercises. We will also read short stories and poetry.
